Recording Murder
It seems as if it were normal for snipers today to record their own “successes” on video. Being cynical, this seems quite obvious, since almost everyone today carries a phone and since one has to wait for the victims to be at the right spot anyway, filming while doing so isn’t a very big hassle.
But this is a new qualitative development. When Robert Capa took his famous image of a dying soldier during the Spanish Civil War (I know, there is a debate around the authenticity of this images), this was kind of an “accident”. Sure, as a war reporter, one might hope for this kind of “accident”, but there is no way to plan for it. But when a sniper sets up a camera just to record his kill, the propaganda seems to be more important than the act of killing itself. This is different. Here, people are being killed to produce images.
Shown here are the last moments before the hit.
